More and more women are choosing to start their families well into their 30’s and many have not completed their families until into their 40’s.

In some areas ‘older mums’ may be defined as over 35 years and in other they may be classed as over 40’s.  Regardless of the local definition, age is generally not a reason to not plan a home birth.  Most complications associated with having a baby after 35 or 40 are generally pregnancy related rather than connected to labour and birth.  It may be local policy to advise women over a particular age not to have a home birth but as with everything this is only advice and the decision on where you choose to give birth is yours.
